Tyufeleva Roshcha Park - Moscow

About Us

At the site of the former ZiL Automotive Factory, in Moscow, is now an up-and-coming neighborhood named ZilArt.  !melk was commissioned to design the main public park at ZilArt - a vibrant public space amenity and “green lung” designed to restitch an urban fabric that, for decades, was interrupted by industrial uses.  While the entire area was a contaminated brownfield that required several phases of remediation, the park was named “Tyufuleva Roshcha” after its origins as an orchard, prior to the site becoming an industrial plant.

The park is positioned to be flanked by many new cultural institutions, such as a major theater and the new Moscow Hermitage Museum, as well as a commercial boulevard, office buildings, and multiple residential blocks.  It has its own Metro station integrated with Moscow’s larger public transportation network, making the park easily reachable.

In the first stages of the design process, !melk cultivated enthusiasm and conviction (both with the Owner and the City of Moscow) to prioritize the realization of the park over any other component of the masterplan so that the park would function as a catalyst, both sparking community interest as well as contributing to the overall memorability of ZilArt as a new, exciting neighborhood in Moscow.  Since its opening, Tyufeleva Roshcha Park is now one of the most popular day-trip destinations for Moscovites!

The design is based on a diagonal-grid that serves as the main organizing framework, consisting of a progression from intricate urban hardscape areas (on the east side) to larger recreational zones (on the west side of the park).  !melk’s planting strategy emphasizes the east-to-west gradient by featuring a native palette of shrubs and trees, carefully selected to highlight Moscow’s seasonality.  The park has become extremely popular among residents for its unique contemporary character and one-of-a-kind design vocabulary.  Embossed in the subtle topography of the park are playgrounds, sports fields, seating areas, and a lake.  A native planting strategy introduces seasonality and interest year round.  All elements of the park have been tailored to accommodate a range of activities, making the park a vibrant place throughout the day and night.

Perhaps the most remarkable component of Tyufuleva Roscha Park is !melk’s design for the “Assembly Line”, a prototypical park structure that combines and consolidates typical park program, such as kiosks, pavilions, pergolas, elevated walkways, furnishings, lighting, AV equipment, and even water features into one single element.  The Assembly Line offers a unique park experience, as visitors can alternate between the traditional park circulation on “ground level”, and a “three-dimensional journey” full of surprises and unexpected moments.
