JFK Airport Masterplan - New York

Project Info

As a significant and high-volume port of arrival, JFK International Airport is many visitors’ first connection to New York City, and their first impression of the City as an exciting and unique global capital.  However, the JFK of today lacks a cohesive identity and is poorly connected to its adjacencies.

!melk was part of a design consortium that was commissioned by the Port Authority of New York New Jersey to develop an airport-wide Master Plan for “One JFK” - a unified and modern experience of JFK that is inspired by the “spirit of New York State”.  Beginning along the Van Wyck Expressway, !melk’s design for the JFK Journey is fully re-imagined to offer an immersive experience, replete with the varied and dramatic landscapes and ecosystems that are “uniquely New York State”.  In addition to developing this overarching narrative and identity for the airport, !melk’s Master Plan integrates world-class passenger amenity offerings, considers the entire passenger journey including the arrival/departure sequence, and seeks to re-establish the airport as a pre-eminent transportation hub and economic engine.

!melk also identified that JFK has the opportunity to drastically improve site hydrology and work symbiotically with its endemic landscape characteristics.  Multiple strategies to restore the hydrologic cycle at JFK and bolster the resiliency infrastructure of the coastline were developed to not only improve the visitor experience, but also expand positive impacts beyond the JFK Airport property into the surrounding urban tissue in order to benefit the local community.

An entire open space network is integrated throughout the JFK Journey; however a signature moment will be the “Central Park”.  This proposed park at the reconfigured Ground Transportation Center will establish a one-of-a-kind landscape experience that celebrates regional and local connections, is replete with program, gathering areas and seamless connectivity across the Arrivals/Departures zones.
